The crop was brought to Ukraine in the 18th century but did not enjoy wide popularity at first. However, due to its unique properties, flavor and nutritional qualities it conquered Ukrainians’ hearts and nowadays we can hardly imagine our daily diet without it.
Today Ukraine ranks fifth in the world in potato production. Potato consumption in this country is high (about 130 kg per capita per year), which rightly makes it “second bread” for an average Ukrainian.
Sumy National Agrarian University has for many years been a potato research center in our region. So, on March 17, 2017 it hosted a regional scientific-practical seminar “Features of growing potato and vegetables”.
Current issues of potato and vegetables productivity increase by means of the selection of modern varieties and hybrids, modern technological aspects of growing high-quality vegetables, etc. were covered during the seminar. Potato-breeders and vegetable growers of Sumy region participating in the seminar received a lot of information on these vital issues and had an opportunity to share their views.
The seminar was also useful for graduate students and students of the faculty of Agricultural Technologies and Land Use. They listened with great interest to the latest scientific and practical achievements of leading domestic and foreign scientists.
